Environment
Engineers are committed to the stewardship of the environment through sustainable development of our natural resources. The engineering community has a key role to play in the development and implementation of effective environmental policies. Engineers, by virtue of their experience and training, are uniquely qualified to develop needed new technologies, assess existing ones, and provide the continuing technological data and evaluation necessary to achieve and maintain a clean and healthy environment. Scientific, engineering, and technological advice and assessment of on environmental impacts must be incorporated into the policy-making process. Government environmental laws and regulations should, to the extent practicable, incorporate risk-based decision-making and identify priorities to ensure that limited governmental resources are efficiently allocated.
Policy Objectives
- Promote public/private investments in new technologies, processes, and systems for environmental protection and remediation while assuring sustainable development
- Promote increased emphasis on research and development to identify and mitigate known and new environmental impacts
- Encourage environmental management policies that are based on scientifically valid risk assessment and technology
- Encourage design for environmental soundness and related approaches to prevent pollution and minimize waste generation
