Energy
Energy policy affects many aspects of our economy and our society. The U.S. Congress and the states are increasingly focusing on energy through investments in research and development of production, distribution, transmission technologies.
Meeting our future energy needs in a manner consistent with national and global well being will require the development of a broad array of technologies ranging from renewables to nuclear energy. Investments in these technologies are essential for enabling our nation to meet its needs for inexpensive energy that is produced and consumed in an environmentally friendly manner.
AAES and the engineering community endorse an energy policy that will maintain our competitiveness in the international marketplace, protect our national energy security, provide technological solutions to concerns about global climate change and the emission of criteria pollutants, and protect the environment in all phases of the energy cycle - from the extraction of fuels to the ultimate disposal of the products and byproducts.
Policy Objectives
- Support initiatives to advance energy efficiency and conservation to moderate future demand
- Promote efforts to revitalize the nuclear option through implementation of a comprehensive nuclear fuel cycle plan, advanced reactors, and resolution of nuclear waste storage and reprocessing issues
- Focus advanced technology research and development efforts on transmission and distributed generation as well as clean coal, alternative fuels and renewables, energy efficiency, nuclear, and combined cycle energy resources to help mitigate the environmental impacts of energy use
