Washington, DC (January 3, 2003) Paul J. Kostek, founder of Air Direct Solutions, a systems engineering management consulting firm based in Seattle, Washington, has been named the 2003 chair of the American Association of Engineering Societies (AAES). Kostek is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE-USA). He succeeds Dr. Winfred M. Phillips, who completed his term as AAES chair on December 31.

In accepting his role as chair, Kostek said "In 2003, one of my primary focuses will be on helping AAES expand its role in national public policy issues relating to the engineering profession and technology. I also hope to revitalize the Engineering Workforce Commission, by adding new commissioners, improving surveys, and introducing new products." Kostek added that in 2003 he will help AAES retain and expand its membership and develop a plan for involvement in the international engineering community.

In addition to Dr. Phillips, who is a member of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers (AIMBE) and will serve as AAES past chair in 2003, Kostek's executive board at AAES will consist of: Chair-Elect John R. Parker, past president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and returning governors-at large: Harry Bradley, executive director of the American Nuclear Society (ANS); Daniel D. Clinton, 2002 president of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE); Nellie E. Guernsey, executive director of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME); and Shelley A. M. Wolff, 2002 president of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

Joining the AAES board in 2003 will be two new governors-at-large: Dr. Dianne Dorland, 2003 president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and Dr. H. Gerald "Gerry" Schwartz, Jr., 2002 president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Of Kostek's appointment, AAES Executive Director Tom Price said, "Paul Kostek brings to AAES a rich combination of leadership experience within the engineering community and a long-standing, respectful reputation in the private-sector of providing solutions for engineering project management."

Price added, "Paul is an outstanding engineer. He will be a great spokesperson for AAES as engineering becomes more and more important in national public policy and public awareness dialogue."

At Air Direct Solutions (www.airdirectsolutions.com), Kostek helps companies define system architecture and design and software development standards. He is also a consultant with Enea TekSci (www.teksci.com), a company built by engineers that provides software solutions to the engineering and scientific communities.

Kostek, who received a B.S. in electrical engineering technology from the University of Massachusetts in 1979, is a former president of IEEE-USA and a member of the IEEE Board of Directors. He has been president of the IEEE Aerospace & Electronics Systems Society, president of the Seattle chapter of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), and director of the Washington Aerospace Alliance. In addition to IEEE-USA membership, Kostek is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, INCOSE, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Project Management Institute.
