BYLAWS OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ENGINEERING SOCIETIES, INC.
A Non-Profit Organization


100. MEMBERSHIP

101. AAES shall have four categories of members (hereinafter referred to as members or member societies). (A) Member Society. To be in the American Association of Engineering Societies, Inc. an organization must have a United States national engineering component composed of individual members and must meet the following requirements:

1. More than one-half of the United States resident voting members of the organization must have received an engineering degree from an institution of recognized standing, or have been licensed as a professional engineer, or have been qualified as an engineer in training. For United States institutions, recognized standing is having a current ABET accredited curriculum.

2. At least two-thirds (2/3) of the U.S. resident voting members of the organization must qualify under (1) above or have a record of work experience in the practice of engineering satisfactory to the Board. Engineering is defined as the application of mathematical and natural sciences to the practical and economic utilization of the materials and forces of nature.

3. Eligibility under these requirements must be established by a membership survey whose results will be subject to the review and approval of the Board.

4. An organization not meeting the above criteria, including an Associate Member Society, that feels its interests and activities warrant full participation may petition for Member Society status. A three-quarters (3/4) vote of the Board is required for such an organization to be admitted as a Member Society.

(B) Associate Engineering Society. Any U.S. based national society which does not meet the criteria for a Member Society but which in the judgment of the Board would contribute to the advancement of the objectives of AAES shall be eligible for consideration as an Associate Society.

(C) Regional Engineering Society. Any U.S. regional organization which in the judgment of the Board would contribute to the advancement of the objectives of AAES shall be eligible for consideration as a Regional Society.

(D) Affiliate Members. Any U.S. organization that in the judgment of the Board would contribute to the objectives of AAES, and that is not eligible for any other category of membership, shall be eligible for consideration as an Affiliate Member.

102. A society applying for membership in any of the several categories described in the Bylaws shall furnish eligibility data to the Board. An affirmative vote of at least two-thirds (2/3) of the total Board shall be necessary for election, except as noted in Section 101(A) 4 of these Bylaws.

103. Resignation by a Member Society, Associate or Regional Society shall be by written notice to the Secretary/Treasurer.

(A) Except as noted in Section 103 (B) such resignation shall become effective twelve months after receipt of the resignation by the Secretary/Treasurer.

(B) Resignation of a member society resigning within 30 days of the approval of dues for the subsequent year (Section 502) will be effective at the end of the then current year.

(C) A resigning society shall continue to be liable for its assessment of dues on a pro rata basis until the effective date of resignation.

104. Membership of a society may be terminated at any time if it is found that such society no longer meets the provisions of the Constitution and Bylaws, or for other proper cause. Six (6) months advance notice shall be given to the society, along with the reasons for proposed termination.

The society shall be given the opportunity to appear at a regular or special meeting of the Board to appeal the proposed termination. Any five (5) Member Societies may present to the Board a proposal for the termination of a society’s membership. An affirmative vote of at least two-thirds (2/3) of the total Board shall be necessary to terminate membership.
